DIY Geometric Gold Foil Art

So in our new bedroom we've got this little nook that I want to use as my office. Where I can blog and design. We made a desk using IKEA trestles and two boards from our previous dining table. I found the chair at Ross one day and my office looked a little more like an office except for the bare wall. I thought about doing shelves but I love simple design so I brought over two frames I had originally bought for our living room and searched for some art I could DIY because 11x14 art isn't cheap and I am cheap thrifty.

I found this geometric art tutorial from Shop Sweet Things and decided to give it a try. Except I couldn't use tape because I used a poster board instead of a canvas so I could frame it. I ended up improvising and cut out strips of another poster board and taped those together in place of tape. I LOVED the colors they used but I didn't have the exact shades in my acrylic paint stash so I did a little mixing to create my own. I started off using gold paint but during a hobby lobby trip I spotted a metallic poster board and I thought it would look even better. So I measured and cut the exact size I needed and modge podged it on to my finished art.

I love how they came out. I ended up spending like a dollar on this because I already had most of the supplies. I love that I ventured out and tried bright colors. Our bedroom still needs some work for it to be completed (like outlet covers) but it's coming along nicely.

Joshua's Bedroom

Joshua's new room is MUCH bigger than his previous bedroom. Eventually this will become Joshua and Levi's shared room but for now it is just his. Here is what Joshua's room looked like the day we purchased our home. There are still a couple of finishing touches like the closet doors and some of the outlet covers are missing but other than that this room has come a long way.

It's come a long way from the purple wallpaper and dirty old carpet. The main things we remodeled in this room: removed popcorn ceilings, removed wallpaper, re-textured ceiling and walls, fresh paint, new floors, new baseboards, and new ceiling fan. I used almost all of Joshua's decor from his previous room. I'd love to do something cool with the closet doors but for now these will do.  We recently moved our old TV to Joshua's room along with our wii. We don't have cable so he only uses it to play wii on ocassion. The computer isn't connected to the internet. He uses it to practice typing and plays the games that are on the computer. SOURCES

Dollhouse Makeover

Sarah's Dollhouse got a little makeover. I found this wooden dollhouse at our local goodwill for just $7.99 back when we were working on our home. It was in storage for a while and then I finally brought it into her room and worked on it. I painted it pink so it could match her room and updated the trim with with paint. Sarah and I had fun working on this project together. Here is what it looked like the day I bought it.

Here is what the inside looks like now...

I painted the walls gray and used scrapbook paper for the floors. I used modge podge for the first time on the floors and loved it. The top floor is the bedroom. My sister had bought her a furniture set that included beds and I made the blankets out of an old short I had. I also bought the IKEA dollhouse furniture set and used the rug and shelves for the bedroom.

I cut out frames from the IKEA catalog and we taped them on to the walls to form a small gallery wall. I spray painted the table and chairs gold because they were an ugly purple color.

Sarah loved her fresh new dollhouse. We both painted the outside together and she helped me arrange all of the furniture. Our main home might not be complete but at least Barbie's is ;)

DIY Gold Striped Pillow

Here's a simple DIY I made for our master bedroom. I've had this thrifted chair for a while now but it needed a little companion. None of the pillows I had were working for me so I remembered I had bought some cloth napkins on clearance at Target a long time ago hoping to turn it into a pillow cover and I had leftover paint from Sarah's READ letters. So here is what I used. Please excuse the dirty tape, it was sitting in our garage covered in dust and dirt.

Before sewing my pillow cover I taped one side to create a stripe and then painted it and layed it out to dry.

Once the paint dried I created my envelope pillow cover using this tutorial. I love envelope pillow covers they are so easy to make! In fact I'm going to create another for a pillow insert I bought for our bed. Here's my pillow cover all ready for it's pillow.

Sarah's Bedroom

We have finally finished one of the rooms in our new home. Sarah's new room is bigger than the one she shared with her baby brother in our first home. I had so much fun working on her room. Tons of pink and gold everywhere! This is what her room looked like the day we purchased the house.

We removed all of the popcorn ceilings, added new flooring, fresh paint and a new ceiling fan. I wanted to bring back the color scheme I used in her room at first in our previous home. I actually re-used a lot of the decor and furniture and just added some finishing touches here and there to make it her own. She is LOVING her new room. It's pink and gold and very Sarah. I feel her room reflects her personality very well.

I created a little reading center for her on the wall alongside her bed. She loves books and often asks me to read to her. I had my husband hang the same IKEA spice racks we had for her previous room along this wall to display some of her favorite books and the rest are in a basket next to her thrifted rocking chair. 

Here is another before picture of her room facing the closet. This room was an ugly shade of green. 

We haven't painted the closet doors yet but now that the room is finished I don't mind the green doors at all, I am sure we will paint them someday but for now they will do. As you can see a lot of the decor from her previous room is here like the Jesus Loves Me Art that my friend Pamela made and the thrifted globe (my fave!).

I shared the gallery wall with you all yesterday. You can find the free printables there as well. As you can see our doors are still the original wood doors which will be replaced one day. I am planning to paint the dollhouse. That is one of the projects on my to-do list but for now she plays with it as is.

I love walking into Sarah's room to see her playing there. She loves all of the space, space she didn't have before in her old room. 

We are working hard to finish Joshua + Levi's shared room and our Master Bedroom. Those will be up on the blog soon!

Sarah's Gallery Wall

Sarah's room is the first room in the entire house that is completed. I finally put together the finishing touches this weekend and I'm excited to share the full reveal with you all tomorrow. This gallery wall was one of the projects I recently finished. Sarah's new room is bigger than her previous shared room with Levi. So there were a lot more walls to fill and I've always wanted a gallery wall in the house and I thought I would start in Sarah's room. I used frames and prints I already had and created some new art prints as well. 

The largest frame is from Target and the golden polka dots are leftover ones that I used on one of her walls. It was a large frame and I didn't have any art to fill it with so I remembered the polka dots and decided to give it a go. The white mirror and remaining white frames are from Ikea. The pink frame was a gift for Sarah when she was born, it holds her foot print and date. The starburst mirror is a set of three from TJ Maxx. The princess sign my friend Pamela from PB&J Stories created for me as a special request. Princess is the meaning of Sarah's name (God's princess). I want to share two new art prints I created with you all, you can purchase them in my etsy shop!

The first is a print I created from Psalm 139:14 which is my favorite Psalm. I wanted this to be a reminder for Sarah of just how special she is. The second is a globe because I am obsessed with them! I added a little bit of pink to make it a bit more girly. You can find both prints in my etsy shop. More prints to come!

DIY House Numbers Sign

I posted this picture on instagram this weekend. My husband and I completed a little project for our new home. We went to Home Depot and picked up a couple supplies to create our new sign. It took a little longer than it should because the back part of our numbers broke the first time so I had to go exchange them but here is what we used. The boards are long boards from the lumber section. They are cedar boards. I believe one is 4in wide and the other is 1in. We stained the boards in the same stain we used on our planked wall (Minwax^® Special Walnut 224 Stain). 

A couple tips:

Make sure to drill big enough holes for the back of your numbers. We didn't at first and so the back of the numbers broke off. We placed the numbers on the finished boards to see exactly where we wanted them and my husband lightly pressed them to see where he would have to drill. The boards are nailed on to two smaller boards on the back which were nailed to the house. 

I drew out a rough draft on paper of what I wanted it to look like. Which was two skinny boards on top and two thicker boards on the bottom to form a rectangle but once we had three boards I felt adding another would make it look more square-ish. So we went with three in the end. I love that the numbers aren't centered. That's exactly how I envisioned it. 

Here is what the sign looks like from a distance. As you can see we still have a lot of work on the exterior of our home. I'd like to remove the screen door for sure, add a planter or two, fix all of the rotting wood, and paint but we are taking it step by step. 

I'm sure we will be working on this home for years to come but that's ok. As we finished this project, I took a couple steps back and just let it all sink in. I still can't believe we live here. There is no doubt in my mind that it was all God. So we will enjoy each and every step and proudly work on the home the Lord has provided for us. 

R.E.A.L. Girls + Sadie Robertson

    Last weekend I was able to attend a young girls conference that a couple ladies from our sister churches in San Antonio organize every year. This was my second time attending and I had the pleasure of leading a small group this year. These conferences are for young girls in middle school and high school. They talk about issues young girls go through and just lift up and encourage girls. I really wish there was something like this when I was a teen! Just to be able to fellowship with other girls who share your same faith is awesome! In high school you often feel like an outsider when you live out your faith but R.E.A.L girls conferences are made to make you feel like you belong. This year's theme was ANEW and was based off of Romans 12:1-2 
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind; Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Conforming is something we tend to do because it's just easier than living out what we truly believe. I struggle with this even in my late twenties. We tend to slowly blend into the world without even realizing it. That is the beauty of the word of God, it can touch the heart of a young girl and the heart of a mother of three just the same. I was blessed and encouraged by the workshops that weekend even if they were directed towards the girls. 
Sadie Roberton recently teamed up with Dayspring to create a Live Original line of products for young girls full of positive and encouraging messages. So I thought it would be perfect for the girls attending the conference that weekend. I went to my local Hobby Lobby and picked up three journals to giveaway. I really wanted to buy a ton more but it looks like these are pretty popular and these were the last three items I found at Hobby Lobby.

... and each page inside includes a bible verse.  I always loved writing when I was younger and I loved keeping journals. My favorite journals where the ones with scripture on each page. The verse I would read seemed to be just what I needed that day.

Here is one of the girls who won a Sadie Robertson journal. I hope that when she sees this journal it can remind her of everything she learned at the conference that weekend and that as she opens that journal she can continue to find encouraging messages. 

Being a teenager is hard enough, even more so when you are a follower of Christ. There's so many distractions for teens out there. So much more than I had back in my high school days so I understand that it's hard living out your faith and values as a teen which is why I'm excited that Sadie Robertson, a girl who lives out her faith, came out with this line for girls to remind them who they are in Christ.
