Lets talk about Dishwashers

So... I've never used a dishwasher in my life! When we bought our house in 2005 the dishwasher was broken and we never thought to fix it because honestly I never knew how to use one and didn't really care so much about it. Well it is now 2012 and I want a dishwasher!

Since we began remodeling our kitchen last year we took out our old broken dishwasher and a stinky trashcan is now sitting in the space where a dishwasher should be. Every year we use our income tax money to upgrade something in the house and last year we got our cabinets & granite installed. This year we are getting a new dishwasher and microwave. This is where I need your help! I've been looking for a good dishwasher because I've read about dishwashers breaking and leaking water and such and since I've never used one I need advice! What is a good brand for a dishwasher? What kind of soap do you use? Anything will help! Here is the one I've been thinking about...

It's a Maytag and it's from Sears. You can find it here. It's got pretty good reviews. Does anyone have a maytag dishwasher? Any recommendations for microwaves would help too! I kind of want the appliances to all match so If I go with a maytag dishwasher I more than likely will get a maytag microwave too! ANY ADVICE would be SUPER HELPFUL and APPRECIATED!!

Hope you al have a wonderful weekend!!
We have a fun giveaway planned for next week and if you are participating in my HUGE group giveaway for March, expect an e-mail from me either Monday or Tuesday with more info!

  1. I wish I could help but we just rent so have never purchased appliances ourselves! Our microwave and dishwasher just came with the house when it was built...so probably about 8-ish years old...and not super great. They work, but I wouldn't exactly recommend them -- dishwasher: GE Nautilus and microwave: GE Spacemaker.

  2. We just bought a house in August and we had people fixing it up until December. We got all new appliances, including a dishwasher and microwave.

We have Kenmore everything, since it was on sale and they're pretty good. I never really liked dishwashers because in the past when I've used them they didn't completely clean everything. But this one has been amazing for the 2 months I've been using it!

I throw bowls with caked on spaghetti sauce or oatmeal in the dishwasher. I don't really rinse anything off at all. I let it sit for a day or two while we fill it up and then run it. I'd say 80% of the time it gets everything and when it doesn't there's just like, a tiny oat from oatmeal stuck the the bowl that you can just flick off. It probably also has something to do with the fact that I just throw dishes in there and don't pay attention to how I load it. I'm obsessed now even though I used to insist on hand washing everything and using dishwashers as an expensive drying rack.

Not sure about the microwave since there was a 3 week wait on the one we chose so we just had to contractor choose whatever. It was a lower priced over the range one, though.

Good luck picking out your appliances :)

  3. Oh girl, you will LOVE having a dishwasher! Once you have one you'll never be able to live without one again. We're renting right now and this house just has a crappy one, but it washes my dishes so that's good enough for me! As long as you use dishwasher detergent it doesn't matter what kind you use. I use whatever I can get the cheapest, so sometimes I'm using Cascade, and others I'm using the cheapo store brand and they all work fine for me. Just don't ever EVER no matter how temped you might be, use regular dish soap in it. Even the tiniest bit. I tried it one time when I ran out of dish detergent and I was desperate; I squirted in the littlest bit of dawn and 10 minutes later my kitchen was covered in a tidal wave of bubbles. I was scooping bubbles into the sink for an hour. But that's the only dishwasher catastrophe I've ever had.

  4. Thank you so much Ladies for your wonderful advice!! :)
I REALLY appreciate it! I can't wait to go appliance shopping!!

BTW I tried to replying to you both Aileen & Brooke but you are both no-reply bloggers.
You can easily fix that, I have a tutorial here:

I would LOVE to hear from you! :)
